  • Public Hearing December 14 on County Budget

    The annual public hearing on the County's 2018 Budget is set for Thursday December 14 at 6 p.m. at the Courthouse in Detroit Lakes.

    The 2018 budget reflects a 3.5 percent levy increase. Capital projects included in next year's budget include a new county jail and significant improvements to the Becker County/Detroit Lakes Airport. The County was able to avoid a 19 percent cost increase to the employee health insurance by moving to the Minnesota Public Employees Insurance Program (PEIP) next year.

  • Human Resources Dept. Using New Online Application System

    The Becker County HR Department has released new online application software. To the applicant the process will appear to be just a part of the County Website but behind the scenes the applicant will actually be entering the protected portable/site of Applicant Stack.   • Design Stamping of Concrete Panels for New County Jail Approved for Production

    The architectural plans have been approved and the permit has been issued to start construction of the new Becker County Jail.  The County also has given design approval for the production of the concrete panels that will frame the facility.  The stamped concrete design will create an interesting and textured look to an otherwise standard precast concrete building.   Jail cell production is also underway with delivery of the cells to the construction site this fall.  The project is scheduled for completion in late 2018.   • Construction Improvements to Take Place on County Highway 25

    According to the Becker County Highway Department, construction improvements will begin on Co. Hwy. 25 on August 14, 2017. Due to this construction, there will be road closure and a detour for part of the time. The expected completion date is the end of October. More info...

  • Economic Indicators Remain Strong for County

    Becker County's unemployment rate has dropped to less than 3.7 percent indicating more evidence of an improving economy. The presentation on the county's economy was provided by  West Central Initiate (WCI) to County Commissioners this week.

    WCI's snapshot of Becker County showed an increase in population of 3,535 residents since 2000. The largest employment industry was healthcare and social assistance with an average weekly wages of $745. The highest average weekly wage was in public administration at $878.  The report showed Becker County was in need of a larger workforce, affordable housing, expanded broadband coverage and more child care openings. The industries with the most need include education, health services, trade, transportation, utilities, professional services and hospitality.

    In 2015, 8 percent of the region's population of 228,562 was from a minority group. The area's population of over 65 will continue to grow and greatly impact communities, the workforce and services. For more economic information contact WCI at 800-735-2239.

  • County Gives Final Approval to McGough to Begin Jail Construction

    County Commissioners have approved a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) of $19,779,927 with McGough Construction to build the County's new jail. The GMP includes a sales tax of approximately $500,000 which will be returned to Becker County by the State of Minnesota. Another 2.6% of the total project cost or $501,000 is being held as contingency for the project. Any remaining contingency at the end of the project will also be returned to the County. The jail construction project will be in full swing next month with the arrival of the structural steel and precast concrete. Road, sewer and water improvements are also moving forward as scheduled. The jail is slated to open late next year.

  • Public Notice - Local Sales and Use Tax

  • Human Services Unit Receives State Recognition for Timeliness Rate

    Becker County Human Services was informed by the MN Dept of Human Services (DHS) that the Income Maintenance Unit has met the timeliness rate goal of 96% or higher in both SNAP Expedited & 30-Day Processing of application processing for the full year (Jan-Dec 2016). DHS has provided Becker County Human Services with a certificate of congratulations for their efforts. The Becker County Board also expressed their thanks and congratulations at the April 18th board meeting for a job well done. Congratulations, Income Maintenance staff for your hard work!
